Forest Queen Van
An empty Ford Transit cargo van, converted into a full-time home and office on wheels.
The journey
In late 2019, I set out to design and build a full-time campervan. I had no tools or van building skills to speak of, but the idea of building a home and office on wheels became a deep fascination.
I began by studying many builds using Instagram, YouTube and the web, and one day in March 2019, I pulled the trigger and bought an empty Ford Transit cargo van.
Between 2020 and 2023, on two coasts of the US, I worked through a sequence of projects to build the life support systems required to live and work comfortably in a home and office on wheels. I had help from pretty much all my friends and family, both in building and in space.
What's in it
- Smart home automation and monitoring systems
- Solar power system with battery storage
- Modular living space design
- Full remote work setup
- Custom cabinetry and storage
Resources & inspiration
The reason I was able to create this van was the easy availability of information others had shared online. Some of the most helpful resources were:
- faroutride.com — for literally every system in the van
- EXPLORIST.life — for electrical systems
- Orton Travel Transit — for 80/20 and many systems
I made forestqueenvan.com to pay forward the knowledge I gained from these folks and many more.
